2nd grade technology lessons
These Second Grade technology lessons teach students to use Excel to develop multiple spreadsheet and charts, to use Powerpoint in a mini-project to create dinosaur presentations, and to use Internet Explorer for research. In addition, students will enhance their math skills will the Graph Club by creating, interpreting and printing graphs. Finally, second graders receive the opportunity to participate into the ALL STAR TYPING COMPETITION!
TECHNOLOGY programs 2nd graders use:
Microsoft Powerpoint- Introduce and Review program interface. Explain how to navigate to powerpoint file(s). Students will create a 4 slide PowerPoint about dinosaurs. They will research facts about dinosaurs and combine them with dinosaur images, sounds and motion effects.

- Hurricanes and Tornadoes- Students research on the internet to find interesting facts about hurricanes and tornadoes. Students find several images related to hurricanes and tornadoes. Students use their research and images to create an informative 3 slide Powerpoint presentation.
- Then and Now - Students create a powerpoint to compare objects they use now to objects their parents or grandparents used in the past to do the same things. Students search clipart in Powerpoint to show two objects in their parents or grandparents used in daily life. Students describe what each object is and what each object is and what it is used for.
Microsoft Word- Students will receive opportunity to review program how to open and close the program. Demonstrate backspace, enter, shift undo keys and cut/copy/paste. Write several sentences using spelling words, change font size, font style and add shapes. Children learn to print and save documents.

Microsoft Excel- Here students are introduced the basic aspects of Excel formulas. The students match the money amounts for each letter in the words provided in excel template to figure out how much money each word is worth. Answers recorded on corresponding sheet.

Pixie- is exciting creativity software students can use to share ideas, imagination, and understanding through a combination of text, original artwork, voice narration, and images.
The Graph Club- The Graph Club is an innovative, easy-to-use software tool for creating, exploring, interpreting, and printing graphs. The program's friendly, hands-on environment helps young students make the transition from graphing with manipulatives to graphing in the abstract. As students create and compare up to five different graph types, they develop essential graphing and math skills.
NetSmartz Workshop- Students will learn to be safer online with NetSmartz free collection of teaching materials for primary grade levels. With videos and informative activities NetSmartz can help students understand and practice Internet safety. After the workshop completion students will agree to "House pledges" or "acceptable-use policies" that can help provide clear guidelines for safer Internet use. NetSmartz recommends using the "Internet Safety Pledge" to promote safety discussions and create safer boundaries.

- I won't meet face-to-face with anyone from the Internet.
- I will always use good netiquette and not be rude or mean online.
Real-World Safety Rules
- I will always check first with my parent, guardian, or other trusted adult before going anywhere, helping anyone, accepting anything, or getting into a car.
- I will take a friend with me when going places or playing outside.
- I will tell people "NO" if they try to touch or hurt me. It's OK for me to stand up for myself.
- I will tell my trusted adult if anything makes me feel sad, scared, or confused.
